Seeing people in processes

From our Friday noon memo #6:

Each organization - whether commercial or not - can improve its performance and efficiency. Not sure where to start? No time and money for the big leap? OK, then simply start small. Take these steps for an immediate effect:

  1. Select a process that spans over more than one department, and invite all process contributors to one workshop.
  2. Ask all participants to identify the organization's goals from their viewpoint. Get them aligned.
  3. Let the people name their top three activities that contribute most to the achievement of these goals.
  4. Link the activities and visualize the resulting process.

By linking people, goals and processes in this way, you get a strong employees' buy-in and a robust basis for focused process improvements, which have higher chances to succeed than any top-down "headquarters exercise".

Till next time. Volkmar
